SAFTzine is a speculative magazine dedicated to architecture and other inventive practices, which is published randomly in limited edition. Each issue is printed on a huge sheet of paper of one square meter of size, which multiplies in your hands growing in an exponential manner.
Even though one single issue weighs only 40 grams it is dense in contents, in feedback and ‘feedforward’, in juxtapositions and casual encounters. Inside its carefully selected unpublished materials from different fields are combined in a way as to incite the maximum amount of questions.
Each issue is dedicated to a specific topic or phenomenon investigating experimentally the encounter between architecture and other related creative practices with everyday life.
Its form is compact and versatile, or better dense and complex. Dense such as in concentrated, where the essence of something has been distilled and complex as in folded multiple times, where each fold informs and produces the potential for a sudden change of state or the revelation of something which had not been existing previously, where with each unfolding different scales and consequently new relations appear.
A collection of keywords related to the topic of each issue is present on its cover and connects to other issues as well as to the website, here other stories unfold, and other connections can be made.
SAFT - the modular book, is an unconventional editorial project. At the same time, it is a continuous heteroclite book as well as a potential experimental installation. While it weighs only 500gr its size has to be measured in square meters.
The book consists of a collection of independent parts, of a series of sections of the everyday. Each section is dedicated to a specific phenomenon or topic, which has been investigated through an approach of the millimetrically exact, in a state of affairs where everything is taken as a potential resource for something new, without regard for where it might come from.
Each of its coloured sections is identified by its title as well as by a number, which declares it part of a series, but beyond the arithmetic logic of one number after another, of one issue after another, there exists neither predetermined sequence nor logical order inside the collection — only the possibility of continuous combinations.
In SAFT there are no models to be followed, no methodology to rely on, just invitations to encounter the richness of the world, to go beyond the lulling tranquillity of the already known in order to relish on the luxury, which resides even in the simplest things. Since every invention produces new connections, SAFT is some sort of travel device, where each connection made, potentially leads to a new world.
SAFT the modular book recollects the first nine issues of SAFTzine as well as five features written by Dario Borso, Luigi Prestinenza Puglisi, Franco Raggi, Franco Toselli, Maurizio Vogliazzo and a precious gift by Lisa Ponti.
As a matter of fact, there is not one Saft but many.
Experiments is a series of conceptual books. Each of its volumes tells the story of a different phenomenon. While some of these phenomena might be part of the everyday others are more mysterious or even exotic.
Just like a graphic novel each volume is a scenario, some sort of alternative world produced by a sequence of experimental works accompanied by texts, drawings, photos and images. There are volumes that speculate on different forms of relations between plants and the built, on the different forms and spaces behind the element of water or on what there is behind a mirror.
The series Readers contains volumes which engage a particular section of knowledge in and around the fields of architecture, landscape, material culture, crafts or visual arts. There are readers about the work of a particular architect, designer or artist, about a specific tool, material, place or attitude.
Each volume follows the simple rule of recollecting precious material about its topic and presenting it one piece after the other. The materials can be textual, drawings or have other forms. They come together here for the first time in a carefully balanced mixture of projects, essays and graphical works. Special attention is dedicated throughout the series to the fundamentals and complements of architectural design in their various forms, scales and manifold implications.
