This edition of the series Conversations on Design hosts the two young Italian design studios Studiocharlie and Obelo. Both studios are teams. Studiocharlie, which is active in product and graphic design, is composed of Carla Scorda, Gabriele Rigamonti and Vittorio Turla. Obelo, an office for graphic design and visual communication from Milan, is a collaboration between Claude Marzotto and Maia Sambonet.
The encounter between both studios is therefore not only an occasion to know more about the current state of product and graphic design in Italy, but also for shedding some light on the consequences of teamwork for creative practices. With the increasing complexity of today’s world the decision to form a team, to join forces, is one possible approach taken by many designers.
But what happens when several pairs of hands work on the same thing?
What happens to authorship?
How can you get organized?
Is there an effect not only on how you work, but also on the results?
In order to get some answers to these questions Studiocharlie and Obelo show some of their best works and talk about their experiences, the difficulties of young design professionals today and even give some precious insight about what worked well and did not work at all in their case.
The resulting discussion is a collage of stories about objects and how they were conceived, about golden cubes and Die Gute Form, about their references and about how to attack as a team and maybe win a Compasso d’Oro as Studiocharlie did.
